Dear Mr. Johnson,
I have read your article about the Basque language (Wall Street Journal, Basque Inquisition: How Do You Say Shepherd in Euskera? November 6, 2007) and I want to tell to you the impression it has caused on me. Things like this make me mad and sad.
I will not be so long, other basque bloggers, for example Katixa Agirre or Luistxo Fernandez, have answered your article in their blogs and I agree with them.
Anyway I would like to add some words. I think that you, like a journalist, have a high level education that you have got in a University so I think you are not an ignorant . You said in other interview: "hizkuntzek betidanik erakarri naute" (languages get my attention) so you must know the universal value of all languages. You will also know the difficulties for a minority language to maintain speakers. Basque Parliament in a effort to promote the knowledgement and use of basque language has approved some laws in this direction in accord with the mayority political parties.
So I do not understand the key of your article without a pure political intention against the mayority of basque population.
No more words, only some questions. You has been in Basque Country, read again your article, do you think the issues you wrote explains the situation in our Country? Do you really know what was Inquisition? Do you know the press in basque language? and radios? and TVs? Do you know Basque Wikipedia? Do you know Bernardo Atxaga? Have you ever have a talk with Pete Cenarrusa?
A last question: WHY?
Regards.

No estoy muy seguro, Josu, pero creo que en el consejo de la empresa propietaria del WSJ se sienta un señor de bigotes. Y si no, tal vez estén haciendo méritos…
